Summer Gardening Tips

Jul 06, 2018

Keeping your garden looking beautiful and healthy all summer long is something that all gardening lovers strive to achieve. Here are four summer gardening tips from Less Mess to help you keep your garden and backyard looking their best all season long.

1.       Plan for weeds

Weeds can be inevitable, even in well-kept gardens. As the weather gets warmer, the weeds come out, but there are ways of deterring them from growing in your garden. We recommend the following techniques:

·         Apply mulch - Over time, through decomposition and decay mulch will enrich the underlying soil. Mulch improves soil by adjusting pH levels, improving fertility (more nutrients available to plants), and increasing organic matter. Less Mess carries 4 different colours of mulch – black bark, bright red, cedar and shredded pine to fit any garden aesthetic look and style.

·         Using weed mats – this is a great solution to preventing weeds as it puts a barrier directly between any weeds and soil.

·         Cultivating – regularly digging up and loosening the soil to pull out any weeds is necessary to keep it under control.

2.       Plant vegetables

The warmth of the soil and higher amounts of sunlight will all allow for vegetables to thrive in the summer. The warmer months are the best time to grow these vegetables:

·         Tomatoes

·         Celery

·         Cucumber

·         Peppers

·         Squash

·         Zucchini

3.       Prepare the soil

The best type of soil allows for roots to develop quickly and spread. We recommended using our Less Mess Ultra Blooming Blend - this soil is formulated for maximal root growth. It contains a mix of compost, aged bark, peat, coconut coir and sand. It is pH balanced and designed to retain moisture in even the driest of weather conditions. You may also prepare your garden soil by adding Less Mess Premium Compost - an excellent soil conditioner and amendment product that can be used for topping up and blending into soils for all gardens.

4.       Remove dead foliage and leaves

Spring flower bulbs such as tulips, hyacinth and daffodils will have foliage die off, which should be removed. If you begin to notice leaves yellowing, remove them immediately to prevent infection spreading to other leaves on the plant or flower. If the leaves are still green, don’t remove them from the plant or flower.
